We were always fascinated by the beauty of different textiles. When you see such a detailed picture of the structure of some amazing fabric, you can definitely understand the whole world of exploration and development behind its creation. And you are just mesmerized by the beauty of it. So we started our THM MACROSHOTS editorial series, where we explore the complexity, depth, and beauty of different fabrics, textiles, materials, and hardware through the macro lens.

Our new macro editorial exploring the details of Edition9™ from BYBORRE. This textile innovation studio from Amsterdam is engaged in the development of materials, new functional characteristics, and aesthetics of knitted textiles. Their BYBORRE Create™ platform allows designers and brands to develop their customised knitted textiles by adding their own ideas, colors, patterns, and knitting options. For each Edition, BYBORRE releases new products, demonstrating these new fabrics and tools.

For the FW21 season, their Edition9™ is inspired by the outdoors and was developed during the quarantine of 2020, when the team was mastering a new norm for working at home. With a great desire to get out and explore the nature around them, they decided to study how BYBORRE Performance knitwear can be applied in an outdoor environment, and how to adapt current products to create new ones that speak the language of outdoor clothing, retaining their specific characteristics.

As an illustration of this collection, BYBORRE teamed up with the legendary Dutch tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher to develop textiles based on his artistic style and the outdoors.

Classic silhouettes like Weightmap Sweater, the Over Shirt, and the Tapered Cropped Pants have been redesigned to protect against cold conditions while maintaining the comfort of knitted textiles. The new fabrics are OTM™ [Ottoman structure] – a variation of the proprietary 3D knitting technique with a characteristic alternating ribbed or cord structure, as well as AO2™ Heavy Weight – denser and more durable knitwear designed for outerwear and trousers, and having an unexpected structure to it reminiscent of denim or heavy duck cloth.

In addition, for research and development within the framework of this collection, the studio has teamed up with Meryl, GORE-TEX, Majocchi, as well as Parley for the Oceans [a global network and environmental organization known for its strategy to combat plastic pollution in the seas] – to create textiles using innovative Ocean Plastic® threads from Parley, made from recycled marine debris.
