THM MACROSHOTS N40
[SHANGRI-LA OUTDOOR
Redorta 3L jacket]
We were always fascinated by the beauty of different textiles. When you see such a detailed picture of the structure of some amazing fabric, you can definitely understand the whole world of exploration and development behind its creation. And you are just mesmerized by the beauty of it.
So we started our THM MACROSHOTS editorial series, where we explore the complexity, depth, and beauty of different fabrics, textiles, materials, and hardware through the macro lens.

Today we take a closer look at freshmen of functional outdoor clothing scene – Shangri-La Outdoor. We are featuring their inaugural product:

"Redorta" 3L Hardshell Jacket in Forest and Ice colorways.

Shangri-La Outdoor is an Italian brand based in the Northern Italian Alps. Team's venture into the hardcore outdoor clothing comes next after their heritage motorcycle brand – Shangri-La Heritage.
"We're bikers and explorers, so about 5 years ago we launched Shangri-La Heritage, a brand focused on gear for motorcycle explorations, inspired by heritage garments from the past and entirely made in Italy.

We're also mountain explorers and mountaineers. In 2020 we felt the need to create proper garments for our outdoor lifestyle, again, entirely made in Italy and with the highest performance possible, thus Shangri-La Outdoor was born".

The experience and approach to craftsmanship, which is gloriously highlighted on their website with stories of their artisans, translates into this new high altitude venture.
"The majority of all high performance garments are produced in developing and emerging countries with questionable practices.

In contrast, we choose to manufacture our gear in Italy by an Italian family business who's work ethics and environmental and social values mirror those of Shangri-La Outdoor".

Jacket is made of Dermizax® EV Bio-based membrane, developed with Toray. Let's get the spec sheet out of the way:
  • Dermizax® Evolution Made in Japan – 3 Layer Recycled 100% Nylon Bio-based
  • Waterproofness: 20.000 mm water column
  • Breathability: 20,000g/m²/24hrs
  • Aquaguard Zippers by YKK®
  • Fully taped seams
  • Two front pockets, as well as an internal chest and a small sleeve pocket
  • Storm hood fitted for climbing helmet with one-hand adjustment
"Redorta" lacks gimmicks, it is straight to the point, unlike many new products, which move the accent away from pure functionality and to less important, in the outdoor environment, features. This simple and toned down exterior, which is complemented by some rich color options, gives a utilitarian feel of a piece of gear.
The cut of the jackets allows for a very dynamic movement pattern. Your articulation is not obstructed at all, which lends itself perfectly for many of the advertised activities. A big plus is the tactile feel of the material, which is close to the GOATs of handfeel, like "Cutan". You can also pack the jacket with ease. It is available online via Shangri-La's webstore.
Lightweight and minimal, yet confident and very well executed construction showcases an immaculate approach to creation by the Italian newcomers, who are ready to take on the giants of the industry.
